Ākonga without vision loss learn nearly all social skills through observation of their environment and people. For ākonga with vision loss this very important aspect of learning and development needs careful, conscious, and explicit instruction, as it is more challenging to accurately interpret visual social cues like facial expressions.
Working with her RTV the learner has undertaken a range of activities, including both on-line and ‘real’ experiences to assist her understand, practice and experience social skills.
This learning goal came from ākonga voice and IEP generated. The outcome is that Laura will not be disadvantaged in social settings, and so she can build meaningful friendships and relationships on her own throughout her life.
