What an awesome way to celebrate te wiki o te reo Māori! To add to our te wiki o te reo Māori celebrations, we had a ‘Make a hamburger’ lunch on our Homai Campus. We got the idea from the resources shared by the promoters of te wiki o te reo Māori.
Anybody who wanted a hamipēka made a donation and used Te Reo Māori to choose fillings that suited personal tastes. We made simple language structures available in advance and promoted our event across the network.
The event was organised by Te roopu o te Whānau o Homai (a group representing staff, ākonga and whānau who promote te reo me ngā tikanga Māori across the BLENNZ network). They were humbled by the support and effort that made the Hamburger lunch a success.
It was so precious to hear the use of te reo Māori in classrooms and in the staffroom while people practised prior to the event and then while ordering a burger. Everyone made such a wonderful effort, from the youngest ākonga, to the Tumuaki, and everyone in between. We are quite proud of everyone involved. Whanaungatanga, Manaakitanga, Kotahitanga, Ako and Āwhinatanga in action.
Kia kaha te reo Māori! Let the Māori language be strong!
