The purpose of Immersion Courses is to bring learners with a similar need together to gain skills and knowledge in areas of the regular and the Expanded Core Curriculum. They may also focus on the needs of parents or in some cases bring both learners and parents together to support improved outcomes for learners.
This year, on the courses for Braille learners aged between 9 and 14 we have had several students step up into a mentoring role to support their technology skills and knowledge, Braillenotetakers in particular.
One of these students prepared and led a questionnaire with the group at the beginning of the course in order to identify appropriate follow up support.
She has since prepared step by step tutorials for a younger group of learners. These tutorials related to assisting students to complete every day tasks such as using a USB stick in class.
We have also involved an adult braille user with a high level of knowledge and skills in using a BrailleNote Apex and Braille Sense U2. She supported the students and contributed to step by step instructions. These resources have been shared amongst the students and Resource Teachers Vision and will be available on the BLENNZ website once they have been reviewed by staff and students.
