Over the past year BLENNZ Southland have embraced the new BLENNZ Developmental Orientation and Mobility Model and have actively included this in day to day practice.
We believe that, with appropriate training and support from a DOM Specialist, RTVs are able to assist learners to develop their orientation and mobility skills in tangible and practical ways.
We have prioritised providing opportunities for our learners to develop their skill base as per the IEP goals.
These goals are set through family guidance and are supported by the DOM Specialist. A number of our learners have had programme goals around exploring their local town and practising their road crossing skills.
The aim of these goals has been to provide supported, structured and regular opportunities for the student.
With the assistance of the RTV, learners develop confidence toward future independence as well as to gain skills to keep themselves safe.
We have noticed significant improvements with these learners. Their families have also commented on how fast their progress has been. I guess the old saying “practice makes perfect” is very true for all learners.
