The BLENNZ Developmental Orientation & Mobility (DOM) Service continues to evolve from the ‘Specialist’ to the ‘Collaborative’ Model.
DOM Services are being provided nationally in a ‘skills sharing’ manner where the DOM Instructor models and shares strategies with the local teams.
These teams then provide the day to day reinforcement of the strategies, with specialist monitoring. Figure 1 shows the DOM Coordinator, Kay, modelling playing Twister to a Teacher Aide and the local Resource Teacher Vision.
As efficient motor skills are the base skills for later travel, this learner’s team encouraged him to play Twister daily with one of his classmates in order to assist with developing balance and body awareness. This is a fun and social way to refine development!
