“Give me time”
Approximately 70% of the Auckland Early Childhood roll have multiple complex needs as well as a vision impairment. They need to make sense of the world around them through a multi sensory approach to learning.
A multi sensory approach encourages the development of all the senses, hearing, vision, taste, smell and touch and also enhances the integration of all these senses, developing perceptions and concepts.
To begin to understand where a native bird lives Jayden explored leaves. He smelt them, touched them, felt the breeze they made when shaken. And he was given time to explore.
He listened to the sound of the Bellbird which made him look towards it. He listened over and over again. And he was given time to listen. He felt the softness of the feather on his face and on his hands. And he was given time to feel.
“I need time to touch and explore
I need time to locate and look
I need time to smell
I need time to listen
And I need time to recall
I need time to learn”
