Kia ora my name is Renee and I’m 15 years old. I am in Year 10 at Wellington Girls College and my goal for 2014 was to independently research on the Internet using my iPhone connected to my BrailleNote, which is acting as a keyboard and display. This is something I had done in 2013 and in the earlier part of 2014 but wanted to improve throughout this year.
I haven’t had many individual research projects to do for my subjects at school this year. A lot of them have been group research projects, but in my individual research projects and in some classes such as science where I might just want to look up a basic fact or something that I’m interested in finding out about, I have successfully used my iPhone connected to the BrailleNote to search for things on the Internet. I also do it in my free time when looking up things such as lyrics to songs or words in French which I can look up myself on the Internet using the BrailleNote and the iPhone.
I think my next steps would be to continue to practise navigating using the iPhone and the BrailleNote to get around different kinds of websites. And to more easily find sections of text and headings within websites, that’s just practising using VoiceOver and the BrailleNote. And also continuing to practise taking notes while reading from the iPhone and the BrailleNote, going between reading from the phone and writing notes on information. And also possibly using a laptop with JAWS in 2015 and 16 and 17 to research for my school projects. We are applying for one this term so that I can get a music programme for next year and also use it for maths and to continue to use that for research.
It will be interesting to investigate which websites are accessible on the different devices in 2015. So I think that is what my goal is and my next steps for researching in 2014 and in the years to come.
