In April the Napier Volunteer Resource Making Group was delighted to meet one of the learners they support, seven year old Jordan, at a shared morning tea at Jordan’s school.
The volunteers, teacher aide, members of the Visual Resource Centre and Jordan made butterflies out of ginkgo leaves gathered from the school garden (figure 1). Jordan enjoyed holding the string and flying the butterflies to a butterfly song (figure 2).
As a token of appreciation, Jordan had organised her own surprise and presented everyone with a mini Easter egg. She has since shared that she loved meeting the volunteers and now calls them by their names and asks who made the resources.
For the volunteers, meeting Jordan was a positive experience which has helped them to understand the importance of their work in creating resources to meet the needs and interests of BLENNZ Napier learners.
