Inspired by research, “that one of the most effective approaches to helping young children develop literacy skills, is a home environment that supports literacy,” – quote from the Reading is Fundamental website – the BLENNZ Gisborne VRC has provided workshops for BLENNZ parents, grandparents and whānau in the area of literacy with their children.
In figure 1 Walter is reading to his son David at home.
We encourage whānau to share what they are doing at home and provide them with access to information and resources, and the Pause, Prompt, Praise strategies for reading with their children, with the support of laminated instruction cards.
The whānau resource pack contains a story book, alphabet cards, a Poem Book (in Braille or enlarged print), a small whiteboard and pen and Pause, Prompt, Praise cards.
Feedback from the whānau has been very positive, and they have developed improved confidence and skills in supporting their children at home with their reading and writing.
