This Immersion course was for ākonga (ORS VO VH) in Years 4 – 6. They headed off-campus for a bush adventure with Harry from Barefooted NZ. Ākonga learned about NZ trees, wove putiputi (flowers) with harakeke, cooked bush doughnuts over a campfire, learned how to get sparks from a flint and steel, and put-up hammocks in the bush. Ākonga navigated their way out of the bush, retracing their steps and using the terrain (and their canes) to guide them.
The next day they took public transport to Māngere Maunga and went to the Māngere Mountain Education Centre; they were guided on a hikoi up the maunga and visited the māra (garden), planted rīwai (potatoes) and tried kawakawa tea!
