On the 26th May, Tauranga VRC ran a Curriculum Day for our primary aged braille ākonga. The aim of the day was to explore measurement of time and space. Developmental Orientation and Mobility specialist, Mark Gear and a team of Resource Teachers Vision worked with ākonga to measure parts of their own bodies and create a “flat body” of themselves.
The ākonga were then able to measure their own steps and discuss how long it would take to walk different distances. This was put into practice with a guided walk to the local playground, counting the number of steps and measuring the time taken to get there.
A successful day with a great deal of learning and fun.
